Idol Physician Researcher

My idol physician researcher is Dr. Fe Del Mundo, she was a Filipina pediatrician, the founder of the first pediatric hospital in the Philippines.. She is recognized and celebrated for her pioneering work in the field of pediatrics.

Dr. Del Mundo’s life was dedicated almost entirely to the service of her countrymen.  She is a woman whose life is so inspiring, so remarkably bold and purposeful.

As a medical student, I admire her commitment to selfless service to provide quality medical care to the sick, especially among children and also her utmost dedication to public health. Also I admire her resourcefulness and innovative ways not only to deliver medical services, but also to make accessible health education that would encourage health-enhancing practices and disease prevention. She was even said to have invented an incubator made from bamboo for use in rural areas that did not have electrical power. Her contributions have been recognized internationally, and she has been the recipient of several awards, including the Ramon Magsaysay Award for Public Service. She was also awarded the National Scientist of the Philippines in 1980 and became the first woman to be bestowed the honor. Her contributions continue to benefit millions today.

As a researcher, I am inspired by Dr. Fe’s passion and service to the country with dedication and fortitude. This country needs more heroes like her, to strive for excellence in their own respective fields of service, putting aside personal gain to serve their country as all true Filipinos must.
